Oskar Carré Poster

The Royal Carré Theatre in Amsterdam is the most well-known theatre in The Netherlands. Since its completion in 1887 this landmark building at the bank of the Amstel river carries a rich history of hosting circuses, cabaret, vaudeville shows, stand-up comedy, musicals, ballet performances and concerts.
 

People of Amsterdam will be familiar with the theatre’s posters that can be found at dedicated spots in the city throughout the year. These posters – produced in-house after a design by Thonik – always consist of a bright red background together with simple yet powerful typography in white.
 

The new typeface family, called Oskar Carré Poster and made by Paul van der Laan in 2011, was designed to match the typography of their already existing logo. Similarly to the logo, the typeface hints strongly back to the style of advertising lettering of the early 20th century in Holland. A special feature is a dedicated shape for the often used IJ combination – once very common but almost non-existent anymore. To complement the family an inline version was produced as well.
