A custom typeface family for the “museum of The Netherlands” – the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Irma Boom Office, whilst designing the museum’s new identity, invited us to draw the type for the logo. Eventually we ended up designing a collection of nine fonts – four of them for common use, four specifically for signage, and one specifically for headings. The design is based on Panno, although during the process it progressively developed into something more unique.

One of the distinguishing features in the new Rijksmuseum logo – an idea already coined by Irma in her sketches – is the typically Dutch shape for the IJ combination. This appearance of the IJ digraph can be found in many examples of Dutch lettering up until the second half of the 20th century, but it has slowly disappeared since then. Current font technology fortunately makes it possible to use this IJ digraph again, and all Rijksmuseum fonts support it.

By restoring the use of this symbol, the Rijksmuseum strengthens its Dutch character, and simultaneously preserves a little part of Dutch typographical history.
